Teacher Recruitment and Retention in Yorkshire and Humber

Improving education and attainment is a critical issue for Yorkshire and Humber, with the region at the foot of league tables for pupils with five good GCSEs. Recruiting and retaining able teachers is a key part of achieving the improvement needed.

It is particularly important in schools facing challenges in attainment or having disadvantaged intakes, where good quality education can widen life chances, improve economic opportunities and reduce inequalities faced by pupils. This research finds that, while overall only a minority of schools are unable to fill teaching vacancies, more face wider recruitment difficulties such as attracting suitably experienced, qualified or able teachers. Moreover, it is schools with lower attainment, lower socio-economic status intakes or a higher proportion of pupils from BME backgrounds who are finding it the hardest to recruit the right staff.
