Economic Impact of the M62 / M1 Intersection Area

Yorkshire Futures working with Yorkshire Forward and other network partners commissioned the European Regional Business and Economic Development Unit (ERBEDU) to undertake this research exploring the strategic importance of the M62/M1 Intersection area.

The first report From Edge Town to a New ‘Edge City’ was produced in December 2008 following input from key stakeholders and a consultation event in September 2008. Stakeholders were keen for the work to be continued, with a focus on potential avenues of action. A follow up report Regenerating the Edge Towns was subsequently produced that looked in more detail at the issues raised in the first report.

The area of the study, described as ‘Edge Towns’ in the work, lies at the heart of the Leeds City Region and spans significant parts of the Leeds and Wakefield local authority districts, as well as a small area of eastern Kirklees. It stretches from junction 27 to 32a of the M62, and from junction 41 to 43 of the M1, it includes the communities of Morley, Middleton, Rothwell and Ardsley, Robin Hood, Knottingley, Featherstone, Castleford, Pontefract, Normanton and Birstall.

The reports From Edge Towns to a new Edge City and Regenerating the Edge Towns are available to download below.
